Hello to all I have recently moved in with my partner. She has in her garden a monkey puzzle tree. However for some reason over the yearsshe decided to burn garden rubbish at the base of this tree and as a result this has burnt and charred the the trunk of the tree. About 4 feet up there there is a large chunk of bark missing and the edges of the surrounding bark are charred. I have now convinced her that doing this was not a wise decision and now we are wondering if there is anyway we can repair this damaged trunk. The tree itself is still obviously alive but the trunk an eyesore. All help towards a best solution would be appreciated Regards |

Maybe she doesnt like the tree? Without knowing species it is a bit hard to say anything on this. I have heard dozens of sp. called "Monkey Puzzle" in other words: any tree that requires a bit of work to clean it up. You could try painting it to match the rest of the trunk. Or start again. |

Monkey puzzle in the Uk is the Genus: Araucaria and Species: araucana If the cambium of the tree has been damaged and the bark is in poor condition then generally this may cause decay and or reduce the tensile strength of the wood at the base (trunk flare). Without pictures I wouldnt like to say if the specimen needed to be felled; but trees should be treated with more care than that IMO. |
