blue spruce tree

my mom n dad have a blue spruce tree and it is turning brown from the ground to halfway up it is most likely going to die. some say there is no helping it cause it has a disease,if this is NOT true what should i do for it? its about 30 years old. also how can i tell from the bark of a tree if the wood is curly?

But Blue spruce is very susceptible to a disease called Cytospora, that normally kills from the ground up, by killing off small branches, and finally whole branches. It is a vascular disease, and once the tree has it I know of no treatment that can reverse the disease.

Sometimes, a fungicide with high amounts of copper might give the tree a little longer to live -- mostly because trees can tolerate higher levels of copper than diseases. But too much copper will also kill the tree. Someone else may be able to give better advice for pesticides,

WIth this disease, copious amounts of gum drip down the tree - white is normal, blue-gray is diseased. If you are sharp-eyed, you may be able to see the fruiting bodies with black heads above the bark -- these spread the spores to continue the cycle with other hosts,.
