i noticed this plant growing out of the soil near my pine tree and i almost pulled it out, then noticed it is a type of birch or poplar tree. so now i am wondering what kind it is, the leaves are soft and fuzzy to the touch. also if i wait for it to go dormant and pull it out after soaking the ground, what are the chances of it surviving? i would like to transplant it after i find out what it is

Looks like a birch - possibly Betula papyrifera growing next to the spruce. Dig it up carefully (now is an ok time) and transplant it so it has time to adapt to a new site before frost. Pulling it out of the ground will strip away most of the root hairs, and it is highly unlikely it will survive.
