If I were to plant a 1-2m tall potted A. gregorii will it grow to maturity during my lifetime? There is a local nursery selling these, and there are a few in public spaces around Phoenix, but I've never seen one old enough to have the cool shape the genus is famous for.

You'll be dead before that tree grows large. There's also a similar one called a Queensland Bottle Tree, Brachychiton rupestris. I ttakes the bottle tree 20 years to start getting the bludge at the base. Most of these trees are bought mature and people pay good money for them.

I suspected that about the baobab. I've seen B. rupestris at a local arboretum. It's a very handsome tree. There was one mixed in with a stand of B. populneus. I noticed a striking difference in how litter free rupestris was compared to populneus. It that seasonal? Maybe I saw rupestris during a cleaner season? My experience with populneus is that they shed copiously year-round. |
