I have several of these on our property, they are all aprox. 12' in height, healthy overall but do not leave on the top 1/4 of the tree? Why is this?

That's not good. It looks like dying up the top. They look like they're planted too deep. They look like drought affected trees. Here, read these thread, some good PDF's in there. Planting advanced burlap trees Nursery Standards

The burlap bulbs were planted deep enough that the top is covered by 3-5" of soil and all the tress have drip systems. Shoul I prune off the branches at the top, they are not dead and still show green when scraped? Thanks |

Most times I plant "proud" with the root crown 2-3 inches above grade. Transplanting Landscape Trees Mulching properly is a good idea too. http://www.village.lincolnshire.il.u...r/mulching.php |

But why are healthy trees not leaving at the top? That was the original question and everyone seems fixated on the depth of planting in this string? I thought this was "Ask an Arborist"? |

so is planting the tree 6" too deep the answer as to why they are doing that? None of the other 20+ trees we planted did this, all were planted the same way ... just the Autumn Blaze Maples?

Hard to tell from here. Planting depth can affect crown growth. If theres 5" of soil covering the root crown then they are planted too deep. The soil around the root crown needs to be gently removed or trees need to be transplanted when dormant. Could be verticillium wilt too. Could be cold injury. Excess fert. from lawns etc. can make plants succeptible. Best bet is to call a local ISA certified arborist. |
