| My ASH Tree is dieing and would like to replace it. What would be the best tree to replace it with? I do liketo replave it with the same shade. What would be a nice tree? It would be a street tree and it is on the West side of my house, in front of house. |

How much room do you have, how tall do you want the tree to get, what kind of soil are you growing on and the moisture conditions, what kind of fruit can you tolerate - nuts, keys, berries etc, how fast do want it to grow, and do you want vegetation all year, like a conifer, or leaves for spring-summer-fall only? Additionally, it sound like you want to plant it on the city's property. You might want to check if there are any restrictions, and they might have a tree planting program and provide one free of charge. |

Well Unfortunately, if you want a clean tree - and you don't like the keys of maples, nor presumably the samaras of ash, you don't want nuts, and that probably rules out berry producing trees, and you don't want the pods of Honey Locust or Black Locust AND you want fall colour AND you want it to grow fairly fast you will probably be looking at a tree species with male and female trees - like Ginkgo biloba - you would want the male tree. Has bright yellow leaves in the fall. OR Perhaps a tree like Bradford Pear (Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford' ) that has minimal fruit. Yellow leaves in fall. If a small hard berry on a wing is ok, Lindens may be a good choice - Silver Linden (Tilia tomentosa), Littleleaf Linden (Tilia cordata) or Bigleaf Linden (Tilia platyphyllos) - all have yellow leaves in fall. You might consider Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glytostroboides) -- a conifer whose needles turn yellow in the fall, and then fall off. Perhaps even Baldcypress (Taxodium distichum). ![]() The big problem is having a fast growing tree, and wanting it to stop at 50 feet. They don't go together very well. Most fast growing trees think 50 feet is hardly worth the effort; so if you only want 50 feet, the slower growing trees will accomplish that, but it takes time for them to grow. ![]() Ash is probably not a good choice, with samaras as fruit (unless you can stand the pod like fruit) and unless it is not susceptible to Emerald Ash Borer. |

What do you think of the Big Leaf Sweet Gum? I think that would be a nice tree. | |
