Default Arborist Training Requirements?

We have employed a guy with an advanced diploma in arboriculture.

Has completed all the RTF units, however all chainsaw/felling tickets are long expired. This guy has 20 + years experience.

What does it take to get re-accredited? Does he have do do the units all over again or can a trainer tailor a course to re-assess competency?

Any links to trainers in Victoria (Australia)?

I'm not sure what the regulations are in that respect but, I would be very surprised if there will be no "Recognition to prior learning assessment option" for people in that situation.

I will be interested in follow this thread and see what the actual regulations/requirements are for these cases...!

Cheers
George

Forestry may have it's own requirements, or not. Not sure.

But re-certification for mainstream is not required, and contrary to what some doomsday sayers may preach IMHO it is BS when one does the job daily providing they do it well.

If an individual is not doing it right as in bad habits have crept in, like here, then spot checks may be required and bit of coaching.

Why not take the guy out in the field and watch him fell some trees etc, that's how you will know if he's competent ... but sometimes the person watching hasn't got a clue too. You ask anyone who hires climbers, they all get tested first, sometimes the ones with no papers leave the ones with papers for dead too!

Thanks Eric,

I'm out of the forestry game now so this is specifically arborist related. I'm pretty certian the legislation in Victoria dictates that he does have to be re-accredited.

Experience means very little here without the records to back you up unfortunately.

Still searching for a trainer who can simply assess competency rather than starting from square one.

I really doubt that there is legislation in Victoria that says that.

About the only legislation you'd have is OHS. And here's a link to the PDF of it online, nothing about recertification.

Working safely with trees - WorkSafe Victoria

http://www.worksafe.vic.gov.au/wps/w...df?MOD=AJPERES

And here's a link to the draft of the National Code.

last draft of OH&S Arb code of practice.

And in there it doesn't even say a qualification is a must:-
Quote:
all staff have received information, instruction, training and are competent in how to carry out the work being
undertaken, for example the worker has a relevant AQF Horticulture (Arboriculture) qualification.
And certainly nothing about recertification.

And I would scream from the rooftops if there was.

You need to field test your employees, if you do not know how to then you hire some-one who does, but it doesn't have to be an assessor or trainer, another good climber will know etc.

He needs nothing IMO just assess his skills on the job with simple tasks and see what he is comfortable with. Many with a diploma cant do the work.

level 2 tree felling is part of the advanced certificate.

I have an employee with level 3 tree felling he comes from a logging background i didnt ask him to get recertified to do residential tree felling

In some work places eg line clearing refresher training of industry needs eg is annually. Ive seen trainers assess long time out of the game chaps and pass them over the days practical skills and seen em fail blokes who don't measure up
I do not believe its the same in domestic Arb or even LG but check with your insurance cover and even ask Workcover they may by surprise be helpful, just don't give your company name up to fast.

Evening,

I can suggest Arbortrim in Mt Everlyn. They have several assessors who do RPL assessments, you demonstrate you know what your doing then there shouldn't be a problem. Wayne to L3 and Garry to L4. Website here

Regards

Tony
