Default An Arborist or not?

Hello, I had a claimed arborist visit my premises recently. My gut feeling was telling me he wasn't trained. I asked him what qualifications he had and he said he was a level 5. I pointed out an ornamental pear tree thats branches had started splitting. I said to him that this sort of tree was known to be prone to splitting and he said to me, "yeah, I've read that".

What info should I ask to ascertain if he is for real. What inspection should have been done to ascertain the health of the above tree? The State is Victoria (Australia).

Thanks.

If hes a level five he will have certificates and be proud of of them, find out where he trained.
with regards to inspections on the trees you start with the soil ph, moisture, light, type of soil, compaction, any thing that may have interfered with the conditions i.e. vehicles, building work directly or indirectly in the vicinity, that could cause a problem like lime leeching from concrete and wash off, what the weather is and has been i.e strong winds, past treatments carried out and then work up the tree, planted too deep, pathogens, fruiting bodies, flora fauna. then you use your knowledge of that particular cultivar and read up on it to find out if there is anything you have missed.

all this depends on what you have asked for from the person testing, give as much information as you can about the trees, past as this is invaluable in the investigation.

As Galbee said, ask to see his qualifications. He should have a Diploma in Horticulture (Arboriculture) to be a level 5 Arborist. Him showing them to you should be no big deal for him at all and I suggest while you are going to site his paperwork site his insurance policies as well - ask about his Professional Indemnity and Public Liability.
