Last summer our Apricot tree's leaves changed color but never fell off. It is now winter and there is snow all around the tree and the leaves still have not dropped. Is the tree dead?

Kathy, I live just outside SLC and we got hit with an unseasonable snowstorm on Sept. 30th (about 12" at my house). This was followed by plummeting temperatures (lows around 20o). This weather event coincided and interfered with abscission. Our aspen tree's leaves this year turned brown rather than a deep gold and many stayed on for longer than normal periods. I suspect what you're seeing with your apricot is abiotic.

ive been told when leaves dont fall off its a bad sign. We see it in Florida when some trees die suddenly and the leaves just like stay on the tree for months sometimes. its crazy, and somewhat rare, but it does happen. are you able to break some smaller branches or scrape the twigs to see if there is life in the branches? You should see green when you scrape it. i think kieren wants you to take a pic. its always nice in this particular forum. |
