Found these, don't think I've ever seen them before. I was going to let some hatch? and see what they were but we had a lot of rain and they drowned. I don't think they are friendly, they failed my chook test. If my chooks won't eat it, it's not good. |

Not millepedes, no legs. I didn't think to get a closer pic until later & it started raining, then poured all night. Just my backyard, good woodchips, gum & bottlebrush, where I park my truck, it just started swelling up over a few days and when I lifted the top off I found them, never seen them before here. ![]() That pic is about dinner plate size, there was a lot. I reckon it's a beetle, that's why I'm a bit worried, they were close [6 feet] from my Tallowood, as in my avatar. Bugs ? Here in Australia, who told you that?Chips, top layer, about 6 months, 16 years below, not deep, always good stuff. Chook meter: http://www.treeworld.info/attachment...1&d=1221741219 | |

NG is on the money I think, larvae stage of 'darkling(?) beetle. Can be used for human consumption:- Mealworm Fried Rice Ingredients: 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp. oil 3/4 c. water 1/4 c. chopped onions 4 tsp. soy sauce 1/8 tsp. garlic powder 1 c. minute rice 1 c. cooked mealworms 1. Scramble egg in a saucepan, stirring to break egg into pieces. 2. Add water, soy sauce, garlic and onions. Bring to a boil. 3. Stir in rice. Cover; remove from heat and let stand five minutes. No shit, got this of internet. I'd trust my chooks Buy Ozzie Organic Live Mealworms and Breeding Beetles Online Today Time I went to bed.....good luck. ![]() |

Mind you, the mealworm dipping sauce is tempting. ![]() Culinary report please. Would you have this recipe with a 'white' wine?? Must go stumping, all the best. |

Thanks guys, NG it seems you sort of got it. I've been doing some Beetle research and it is Darkling beetle lavae, but not the bait one or the one they sell for aviary birds. [trust me to get the bad one] There are 1500 spiecies of Darkling beetle recorded in Australia & 1400 in North America, and over 15,000 worldwide. Tough little critters. Thanks for the reciepe Bill24 but I think I'll stick with the Lamb Roast & 4 Vegs. |
