Hey all... new here, looking for answers. I have this maple in my back yard, no idea what kind, I live on Vancouver Island, BC. I have no idea how old it is, bought this house a couple years back, but the tree is fairly big. Here is what I am seeing with it. During the course of last summer (first summer here), noticed that it had branches where the leaves were turning a nice brown color and dying off. Now these were originally nice and green. Other branches throughout the summer started getting the same thing happening. Appears to be a nice hole in the folliage. I have branches with bark getting rubbed off in large portions, or maybe falling off, its been a windy winter. To me, these branches are looking dead. On one of the main trunks, there appears to be a crack running up it. Wonder if this whole section is going to kick it. I have had a fair number of large size branches break off over the course of the wind storms this winter, but I do see other larger branches that look dead to me from the bark missing near the trunk. Any ideas whats going on here? Sorry, no pics. Camera isn't good enough to get shots high enough up. I am concerned the tree is dying, and if so, I would want to take care of it before it takes care of itself.... on a shed... or neighbours house. This is a great shade tree for the neighbours, and i don't want to prematurely cut 'er down. Called a tree service company last year, but they were of very little help except for quoting me to have it taken down. No arborists near by. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -Todd |

Really hard without pictures, have a BBQ and tell everyone to bring a camera. ![]() Could be some fungal or bacterial disease, like VERTICILLIUM WILT Does sound bad, usually bark peeling off signals DEATH ![]() If roots are rotten ![]() ![]() Better get crack'n before the tree does.

I agree with Eric. Branches dying off, and bark falling off - the tree is dying, and fast. Remove it soon, while it is still safe to do so.
