Default Alternative to a Liquid Amber

I am absolutely in LOVE with Liquid Amber trees but my hubby doesn't want to get one because of the pokey balls (that's what I call them lol). Any suggestions on a good alternative? The characteristic I specifically like is the summer leaf color - that vivid bright green. I also like the bark color/texture, leaf shape, and fall colors but all of those are more negeotiable for me. It's that vivid green color that I love so much that I haven't been really able to find on any other tree. Around our area (S of Los Angeles) I've seen something that's caught my eye, and I initially thought they were Liquid Ambers, but then they don't have any fruit on them from what I could see (driving by). Is there a similar tree to it in color/structure that doesn't have those horrid pokey balls!?

Thesquishie,

I like liquidambars too.

Have you thought of trying a maple (Acer buergerianum, A. triflorum or A. palmatum)?

Try Liquidambar formosana "Rotundiloba" A fruitless liquidambar.
Or maybe for similar form & colour Quercus palustris, Pin Oak.

I think Liquidambars are close on the worst thing you could grow. Masive surface roots ripping up every thing around and they are even crap firewood. Well cow itch are worse.
