My husband put in an electric line underground and cut a large root from our African Sumac tree which is at least 20 years old. The tree has five trunks, only one has green leaves, the other four look as if they are dying. This tree is very large and gets plenty of water, sun and shade. Could cutting this root have damaged the life of this tree? Anything we can do to help it come back to being green and healthly? HELP!!! We live in Tucson, Arizona if this helps.

Sounds like he has killed 4 of the 5 trunks. Nothing you can do now except wait. Keep on watering the tree as you had in the past. Cutting roots always has consequences - especially in summer heat. |

Must have been a substantial root. Never cut roots if it can be avoided, and it can almost always be avoided,
