Post 18 of MAY an NO LEAVES

I have 4 trees that does not have leaves on yet and here it is the 18th. of MAY, I have checked them and you can bend the lumbs and they will not brake. This tells me that they are still alive which is good news.

My question is why are they not in leaves yet? The buds look good on them.
The trees are 2 Crabapples , Oak, and Black Cherry.

How and when will I know if they are dead?

I know at the base of my oak there is leaves coming out, so I am hoping that it means it is alive.

Find a smaller branch/twig and scrape the bark see if it's live underneath.

Depending on your local conditions trees can do a few whacko things when under stress.

In the drought here I saw poincianas bare for almost 4 months, some didn't flower and some flowered 3 months later than usual.

Just give it a little more time and do the scrape test.

I take it that it's had suitable water etc too.

These trees are only 3 to 5 feet tall and yes I forgot about 3 weeks ago we had a very hard frost, would thuis have something to do with it? I would say we had rain but not allot of it The soil did not get dry , but it was not wet ether.

About a 1' away from the trunk, get a small hand trowel and carefully dig down say 8" deep and see how moist the soil is.

If it's moist, not wet, not dry that's great.

It will come good, but over watering can kill trees too.

If you want to be real techno, shove a thermometer into the soil and see what temperature it is, there's some rules of thumb that say it's when the soil temp is high enough things start to get going again. Mulch around the trees help with that too.
