Heyo,

I supply:
Helmet (stihl / petzl)
Hi vis safety vests
chainsaw chaps
gloves (latex dipped/leather work gloves/gauntletted gloves/ & tight fitting work gloves) I have preferences of diff gloves for diff jobs, and my guys have diff preferences, so I supply 4 types.
no fog glasses/goggles
hearing protection (plugs/muffs)
headlamps (3 now, we've been doing some night work)

I have a whole milk crate now that is just PPE for our jobs. Last year I was running 3 guys more regularly but now I just have one guy who works with me all the time.
He's been wearing some crappy shoes so I went out the other night and bought him some steel-toe boots. Seemed a worthwhile investment.

Woohoo I've got high-vis reflective traffic cones now too Does that count as PPE? hmmm.....

If your concern is being able to hear the ground crew, I suggest having whistles on the ground, or an air horn for emergencies.

I think that shouting clear "Call and Respond" commands is sensible and like free advertising. Customers are impressed to hear this communication. I figure that neighbors will also be impressed, and feel that you run tight ship, and safe operation, and its costs nothing. They don't have to pay more shouting.

I provide crew with Stihl hardhats with face screen and ear muffs, safety glasses, Atlas gripper gloves, ear plugs, hi-vis shirts, rain pants and jackets, and chaps.

I tell them that I provide PPE and accept trade-ins readily, but if they lose the PPE, they replace them. I have everyone put initials on everything, so its easy for everyone to help each other when something is found, and I'll know if someone just goes to the ppe cache and gets new gloves if I find one with their initials on it.

I haven't actually ever charged anyone for new ppe, but it gets people to be more mindful.

Also, climbing gear, if they should choose mine over personal gear, ropes, etc.

In the US Forest Service they actually consider a felling ax and wedges as PPE, as it keeps people safe, especially since pull ropes are next to non-existant. With that in mind, wedges and ax.

was that aimed at me?I always yell before i send limbs or tops or wood down.I also look to make sure all is clear and wait for a confirmation that its clear.Over kill yes,but better than someone getting killed by a falling limb.I stil ldon't wear ear protection, but then again i was half deaf before i started in this industry.I know whats coming next so i'll save Ekka the trouble,
.i'm just getting ahead before i get married.

My boss provides ear plugs, a hardhat, safety glasses, and chaps. The hardhats he gives us are terrible so I bought myself a vertex vent, the plugs hurt my ears so I got my own muffs, and his safety glasses are sunglasses so I got my own clear safety lenses.
Pretty much, with the exception of chaps, I've provided all my own gear.

not anythng pointed at anyone.

Funny one about prep for marriage.

I know from personal experience that hearing loss blows... missing out on conversations in loud places, always saying, "pardon" " what was that" "say again".

A friend's dad was in artillery so suffered hearing loss. They always though that they were being yelled at because his voice was just normal volume to him, but so loud to everyone else.

Just a concern to everyone about irreversible damage.

I suggested the whistle/ airhorn as you said that you were concerned that you wouldn't be able to hear a critical warning if you had on ear protection.

Call and Respond, or just calling a warning is by no means overkill, just looking out for the safety and well-being of the crew.

In our present economy, I was suggesting that Call and Respond is a free way to impresses current and potential customers, while being extra safe. I've had many say how impressed they were by our professionalism, communication, and safety. Nobody wants to hire an unsafe crew and have a potential tragedy at their home. I've seen it happen first hand, chainsaw to the hand. Nobody would rehire that company.

No offense intended, hopefully none taken.

Nice touch with the free advertising SST. There are a number of easy ways to impress the neighbours and they are the easiest pick up jobs. Big smile, lots of enthusiasm and bright colours. Hey I just realised. I am a self employed tree climbing Wiggle! Toot toot chugga chugga big red saw!!!

The husky hardhat/muffs/facescreen is 10 times better than stihls latest combo.
