Default Tipper truck project

Brought this 4wd isuzu at auction earlier this week and will slowly convert it to a chipper truck, going to shorten the chassis and pull the tray off this weekend.

That'll be a very handy little rig for out your way. And when you get bored you can drive it on the train tracks!

Back when I was doing overhead line work we called those things "niggerheads". You took a turn of hemp rope around the drum, held it loosely and started the winch. When you wanted to take line in you put some tension on the tail of the rope, which then grabbed the drum and got wound in. As long as you had some weight on the tail of the rope, well, it just kept on winding in. Slacken off the weight on the tail and the rope would slip just a little and you could control the speed and tension on the working end of the line. No good with synthetic rope though, the heat generated by the friction will soften the rope and.......well you can guess what comes next.
Now then A-Lopa, before you do anything to that chasis, is it mild steel or has it been heat-treated? Lots of trucks have heat-treated chasis rails which cannot be welded. Welding destroys the heat-treatment causing a localised weak area and you end up with a disaster waiting to happen, usually when you least need it!
I could be wrong about this and I hope I am but better to be certain about things first.
Dennis.
