Default Stump Grinding - Dust & Breathing Apparatus?

Its been very dry in east Vic. Australia, (S/E Cnr. of Aus), only had 12mm rain in September, driest since records were started.

The amount of dust being thrown up when stump grinding is now being a bit of a problem re the machine and operator I reckon.

Put a pre-cleaner on machine, wondering if other operators think they need one for themselves?

I notice that after 2 or 3 days dusty work that I feel a bit congested and pretty much put it down to the dust when operating the stump grinder.

So, two questions that I would appreciate comment on:-

1/ Do you use a dust mask or respirator when op. the grinder?

2/ What have you found best suited for comfort/effectiveness in all weathers?

p.s. eventually the local dealer rang and had the 'top spin' Donaldson, was about to order one in NSW, thanks for that info, havn't got a/c re price yet.

Good observation..As soon as some thing becomes particulised and is airborne it has the ability to harm our health, So it would be prudent to wear a respirator while stump grinding so in your retirement you can still have enought wind to be an old windbag..LOL.

With your machinery use the best air filter you can afford, remember anything that gets by the filter ends up in the engine!

You never know what's in the ground, a lot fibro [aspestos] bits around here and all sorts of rubbish.

I have a few, depending on the job, sometimes I just use a cheap one untill I get into the stump & sometimes a good one.

It's not bad here now but was really dry for a few years, the best one I could find was this one, but none are really great to wear,

I use chemical masks £2 for twenty, there's no excuse for filling your lungs with crap; if i catch any of my guys ginding on a dusty job without a mask or not using ear defs they lose a days pay, they know that and always wear them.
