JUst wondering about a potential urban myth I've heard and thought I'd run it by some of you knowledgeable climbers on this site. Anyway, alot of the climbing I've done is very commercial and hard on the gear, steel has always been the standard for everything life supporting. As I have been more into res when I climb nowadays I went with a Buckingham Ergovation, great harness so far. The D's on my harness are aluminum and all the biners I have on my straps are steel. While I am now on board with aluminum someone recently told me that it should be aluminum on aluminum and steel on steel. Alot of torque gets put on those D's especially if moving tree to tree with just straps. What do you guys think. I am very vigilent on inspecting my gear before and after every climb but should I have some concern about my side D's being worked with steel biners? Thanks, Martin

If there was any where it would be 50/50 aluminum 100/0 aluminum to steel you would easily see a wear pattern on your D rings if it was an issue my spikes are aluminum with steel spikes and I have noticed no wear but it is not a loose rattling wear like biners to D rings just inspect as you have been ... |

Aluminium on harness rings pretty much compels you to aluminium for biners. If it were vice versa chucking out a biner is way better than chucking out a harness

Well, I guess for now I'm going to just keep inspecting my gear thouroughly and when I do start to see any wear I will just replace my D's on the harness which can be done with the Ergovation. Like I said, here if I go out single stemming or windfirming steel biners are a requirement for life support. |

Of course aluminum is softer than steel and one will wear the other. The two metals also react and cause corrosion. Not an issue for the few hours they are in use, but don't store the two in contact or there will be corrosion.

Are the D rings on that Buckingham Ergovation really made from aluminum?

yeah they are alum, i dont know why people have problems with alum gear, pussies use steel for life support, ive pulled out a landcruiser with a petzl spirt 22kn biner and it didnt break i store metal and alum together caddie pads on buckinham spurs......no corrsion, id say harden up and use alum biners
