you have your ways I have mine, I love trees and would never remove one that I could save. I constantly try to talk people into pruning rather than removing, but I will remove a tree without shedding a tear if I think that it is the right thing to do. After big takedowns I feel good!!!!!!!!!!!

What would you recomend to do where trees have been overplanted and thinning( selectively removing) improves health of remaining trees?

How old are they and does another client have a need for them might be a good way to start this line of argument?

lets san 20 year old redwoods planted 8 feet apart in a windrow, by trying to transplant them you would be damaging the root of the trees that are to be retained. The answer is that of course you should thin the overplanted area by removing some trees. Live trees have to be taken down sometimes.

Danny-boy you are right, there is a time and a place for removals, and best it is done by operators who love their craft.

Its just not for me anymore, give me a big hazard reduction job (see attached), but I have hung up my spikes for good.

But mate its good to hear a fellow tree warrior share his perspective, i'd stand by your side in a brawl anytime.

My utter regards Cass.........

Note - that hazard reduction job was on a Forest red gum - Eucalyptus tereticornis, done August last year)
The tree had a major limb failure (summer break) due to biomechanical constraints (limb elongation, with pronounced supporting wood) and wood embrittlement due to drought stress (dehhydrated wood).

9 hour job with clean up, I shared the climbing (we did a side each) with a long time collueague Dave Gallichan (from Guernsey, ex Merrist wood tree man).

The pic on header (me as climber) is the tree during the reduction -
Cass..........

i'm with Therrin on this one. That's the same exact setup I've been using for almost 10 years. All day comfort and real good on holding the gaff in one place.

Welcome, RDMOTT

Yeah...having those two straps makes a good deal of difference over the single strap ones. Nice thick cushioning... really comfy stuff!

Glad to see ya posting, keep it going mate.

Thanks Therrin and Newguy for the welcomes. One thing about the felt pads is in the summer I almost always climb in shorts and sawdust sticks to the felt like glue. Rubs my shins raw after a good days work.

Yeah, the sawdust sure does stick to the felt....

However, I'm always wearing my Stihl chaps, and 10" boots.

Cutting while wearing shorts, not even jeans between the chain and your skin? To each his own I suppose.
