Hi all My work are in the process of getting 2 new chippers, we have settled on the bandit 1590's but they have the metal cable on their winches. this cable tends to fray quickly as compared to the rope on our 1800xl vermeer. What I would like to know is !. Who is using rope or cable? 2. what are the pro's and cons of each. 3. what brands are, in your opinion, the best? cheers Brad. |

Rope wouldnt even think of cable,1 meter chain choker is enough to drag thru the ground.

We use rope and a chain choker, rope all the way....when the eye wears off just re'tie it and away you go! not to mention if the cable snaps you can have a very dangerous re coil also cable gets furls I think their called...little bit of cable that break and splinter and rip the billy O out of your hands, ropes no where near as bad.. just take care not to back spool the rope.

Rope, modern hitech ropes are actually stronger than steel. Much easier to work with.

Rope, but any good 10mm work rope, Dynema braids are rated at 12-17,000lb for 10-11mm and will cost around $300. Any good spectra braid etc. rated to 8,000lb will do the job and cost about $50 to fill the winch, it will last much longer with the rough treatment. If you put that much pressure on your winch mounted high up on your chipper I would be very surprised! |
