Default Pole Racing spikes

Im going to make some toe spurs, and the only set iv seen were made from cycling shoes with the plate in the toe,

Im thinking gecko pads because they are light, but it would break my heart to pay the $$$ for them only to butcher them.

anyone made some?

Tips?

Ideas?

Maybe in the US? but toe spikes here, the shaft teliscopes in and out so you can use your calf muscles and get more power down (Or up in this case)

Why not the alloy caddies, way cheaper and they're pretty light but very rigid. Ask any women, rigidity is the key to any good pole climb.

Ok cool, what did you use before you went to "caddies"?

Are the pads in the vid the wide ones?

They look good, and because the aloy is exposed it would be easy to work on.

Gecko's are suposed to be alot better once you get rid of those crappy gaffs, ill let you know soon work has just got a few sets.

Had a look at the gallery. Looks like fun. I bet your achilles tendon takes a heap of strain in those spikes. Good for sport, not so good for working all week IMO.

They're on belay unlike the USA and Canadian expendable type of guys. They come down at a rate of knots, must touch 3 times on the way down. Not so long ago one broke their back.

(From poleclimbing.org.uk)

16th September 2007
(unofficial) World record.

Terry Bennett, the current World Champion set a new unofficial world record time of just 8.7seconds at the weekend.

Taking part in the demonstration event held at The Royal County of Berkshire show Terry made
the record climb with the assistance of several of the countries other top climbers.

Unfortunately, as there is no electronic timing at the show the record will not qualify officially,
but it does show what he is capable of and that given the right circumstances the record is
his for the taking.

Maybe that's why my pole climber video world's fastest at Youtube has 25,000+ downloads as of now!

They've been watching closely how it's done!

AHHHH now i don't mind paying a good price for a complex peice of equipment like a harness, but $130.00 for a set of bloody gaffs! cmon really.
50c of steel heated up and poured into a mould and pumped out by the hundred, $130.00 my butt.

Having said that, if i was them and i could get away with it.

um trev can you get gaffs

Aren't you going to have toe gaffs? Likely custom made things that bolt to the shoes.

"Old set" now you have my attention i think an old set would be fine cause i can just file them to shape i want. also i think they will be welded on so it would be a pitty to ruin a new set of gaffs.

No I didn't but I think that he made them from a straight spanner ... bent the end a bit and sharpened the jaws to points ... bolted them to the underneath of a cycling shoe.

Maybe Sidchrome, maybe Snap On ... who knows.

Yeah a spaner is not a bad idea.
I'v got the stainless steel, hope to get them done on the weekend.
The hard bit will be getting the right angle/placement for the gaff, i hope to make the gaff angle adjustable but im not sure.
