I was looking through a 2008 Sherrill Master Catalog (pp.41) and they depicted a setup with a Petzl Pantin and a DdRT. Seems unconventional to use a DdRT with a foot ascender but in my mind it does make sense to use your foot to advance up the rope. I'm wondering if anyone has ever used this method or is SRT just an all around better choice?

I've thought about using one when I foot lock the tail, but thats usaully a very short distance, so I've never invested in it.

I use it, but you have to step up twice the amount of rope that you ascend due to the DRT, you only pantin the tail. It's OK if there's no easier way.

Pretty much as ekka said. The Petzl Pantin foor ascender is a useful tool if youre not fully set up for SRT or even if you use SRT for access but work the tree on doubled rope. If you find your self having to make a mid air ascent, say to move back up after having dropped down between a fork, then using it on the tail saves a lot of air humping and upper body work to get back up there. Still transfers the work to the stronger leg muscles, but you dont progress up rope 1:1 like SRT. It can just stay on your foot throughout the climb, really doesn't get in the way when not in use. I think they are worth it. |

Fore sure, if you have it on your foot from the SRT access may as well utilize it while climbing as required.

it looks liek it would come in handy instead of footlocking the tail.

boots or shoes with a flat sole work the best for footlocking, the boots wih an arch allow the rope to slip,i made an 80' ascent footlockign the tail of my rope yesterday, after having to jump 6' and hold onto the rope while tying it to my harness,i need a longer rope lol.

My knees are not so flash now so i use pantin alot. a very useful tool and you can still have a conversation on the way up. Having a friction saver instaled in tree makes for a very smooth accent. |

I'd have used a LADDER Bill..... Oh, and that BS you were spouting about a 361 being too light for a climbing saw...is total crap. I spent 7 hrs in spikes with mine the other day and my arms were jelly when I got down. It's easy to heft one in the shop and make statements like that, but try DOING it. I need to get my 200T fixed.... |

I never said it was too light,i said it would make a nice climbing saw,it weighs about the same as my 51.I've said it before and i'll say it again,i hate ladders,Treeseer even had a hard time getting me to use one to set a line. When i said it was too small,i meant i need something that can pull at least a 36" bar for my next saw,not a mid size saw.

i use my foot ascender in collaboration with my hand ascender on a single rope running thru a shunt for fast ascentions when spikeless pruning on big trees- works a treat!!
