Hi, I only just found this site so let me introduce myself - you may guess from my user name that I am Dennis, I am 63 years old and live near Perth, Western Oz, I am not a proffessional Aboroculto ---- whatever! but do have a few trees on my small property that require regular pruning and maintainance, I also have a share in a family farm of a modest 8 acres in the Philippines where we grow mango, rice, the obligatory coconut, mahogony and a variety of other crops/trees.Okay now for a request for help ![]() I regularly use a friends "red roo" mulcher and wish to put a set of new blades on it for him. My problem is that it is quite an old machine and the blades are no longer available at an acceptable price (anyware from Aud$500 t0 $800 for two blades). The original blades are single edge and a cross section that tapers from 3/8inch at the front down to 1/8inch at the trailing edge. What I have in mind is to try to find a parralel double edged blade of the same size etc. Can anyone see a problem with this ? - the blade being equidistant from the anvil as it passes rather than tapering away, after all that is how others must work. Here is a pic' what I have. The top of the blade would travel past the anvil whilst the chips would travel underneath and through a hole in the flywheel/disc - this means that the bottom of the blade would travel parallel to the anvil at a distance equal to the thickness of the blade. Have you tried to find anyone to sharpen the blades instead? Could end up a whole lot cheaper.

| I appreciate the suggestion but up untill now I have had quotes of between $200 and $360 for each blade. Unfortunately it is a long weekend so I can't do much more until Tuesday apart from scouring the net. Denn |

What we used to do, when we ran older chippers, was get the blades made by 'guillotine blade' manufactures. We not only got the blades at a better price but they were, or seemed to be, a much better quality. An enginneering shop should be able to test and tell the hardness of the metal. It's important not to get them too hard. | |
