Default ID Old school chipper

I wonder if anyone could help me to ID this old artifact? I just looked at and it is real clean and chips quite well. I can pick it up for next to nothing and I might to just play around with if I can get parts. It has the Ford 172 4 banger that I've owned before and it runs and starts fine.

Thought it might be an Asplundh but I ve had a Fitchburg that the knife set up was real similar (adjustments in the rear of blade). Didn't want to get all dirty looking for name.

I think you are right Treemonkey. I searched it and got to Wikipedia encyclopedia and there is a picture almost dead on. Made by Asplundh early on, I think Altec owns it right now.

Damn I guess I'm old school. Thats what I use day in day out. It looks like mine asplundh/whisper/altec. Mine has strait 6 ford and is approx 25 years old. 1 rebuilt moter same drum and works like a champ. Bought a 98 model altec new same design just newer (then). One of these days I'll get a fancy disc auto feed but right now this machine is making me money and has been paid for since 1983. Its great any part you need for it they have at any auto parts store.

I know what you mean, If it ain t broke why change it? I ve been in biz for around 39 years and owned 3 chippers. 1st a Fitchberg (Ford 172, 4cyl) from 69 to 75, then a 16 inch Mitts and Merrill (6 banger) from 75 to 2000, then Vermeer 1250 (110 hp turbo diesel) from 2000 to now. Wished I kept the Mitts. Could walk it around the driveway and unlike most drums that have 4 knives it had 12 knives staggered (double sided edges) and made real small chips and pulled deadwood real good. Easy to change too.

Does your Whisper have adjustments on the back of the knife, or do you just put them in and adjust the bed knife? I hope the latter.

Funny how these old chippers just keep on going, simplicity and strong.

Some of the new stuff falls apart, broken drums, shafts, handles, lights fall off, auto feeds that reverse at the thought of sweating etc etc. Damned electronics!

Asplund were built here by Deveson Jahn in Cabramatta, Sydney. I had 2 with 330 ci bedford Diesel Engines and 1 with International 262 petrol (Gas) engine. Later models were fitted with 380 ci Ford diesel.
This looks very similar to those.
Blade adjustment is by socket head bolts under each blade. Bedknife or anvil is seldom touched.
Correct sharpening is critical to good operation and branch pull in and bed gap to have fine chip, .030"

Therse machines are great, with only one major moving part, no hydraulic pumps or motors or moving rollers.
I wish I still had one!

Just a wee bit noisy but, hey, if we can't wake up the neighborhood in the morning what fun is there anyway.

I started off with an old deveson jahn 12" disc chipper with hydraulic feed.

Was ok but had a massive gap between feedwheels and disc!

It is powered by a 4 cylinder gas engine,or rather was poweed by this engine. It has a large hole in the block. My question to you guys is what engine replaces this one. Thank you for any info you can give.

Yes these are stll ble to be used. As far as insurance here in Ga. you just get insured for the business and not the equipment unless it is driven on roads. As soon as I can get this one repaired it will be used daily if needed.

Here,s one for you guy,s, i bought 2 of those machine,s in 1994 had one good one built out of the 2 of them had a 16 inch by 9 inch in feed and OMG that thing could chip.
Mine was an FMC with a Chrysler V8 in it (petrol) gas. I wanted part,s for it at one point and found a contact number in the USA and rang them. They infomed me that the company had been sold to JOHNSTON ROAD SWEEPERS.
They no longer made those machines. I did find a guy here in the UK who bought and sold American car,s. I got everything i needed from him, he had contacts in USA .
I think it was about a 6 litre engine in it.
It was a monster, had 2 blades. It would take any timber, no roller feed on that baby, you only had to touch the blades with the timber and man it was gone. You just could not feed it fast enough.

Rob.
