Hey, I think I have seen that one on the left in a Blade movie.

This one will do 1:1 doubled, 2:1 doubled and SRT, with a rescue slot for a third line. This has intrinsic soft lock inclusive on the device.

Let's call this one the descent 'Blade' and although this is not one of the devices on the design list, we may refer back to it for 'essential parts'.

I'd climb with the Blade, but there's a few others I'd put ahead of it.

Let's just call it the "Titan," which is its real name (OK, transliterated from the Russian Cyrillic alphabet).

The lower left hand 8 on the "moving in" photo is the Fisher, which (as far as I can tell) was the original figure 8 design from the UK. Scary piece.

The "number" descenders show my warped sense of humor , and my belief that you can rappel on almost any sufficiently irregular piece of metal that has round edges and a hole to clip in. They all work.

Photos showing the complete display will be on my web site shortly.

...and yes, I partied hard!

I'll second the warped sense of humor.

I'll go further that many devices don't even need a hole to clip into, like the Titan, for example. Run a bight of rope through the slot, run you connection (carabiner) through the bight and you have a friction controller. As long as the slot does not allow the biner to pull through, or for the rope to get pinched in any way between the device and the biner, you're creating friction.

Round edges are key. Sharply angled edges, bad.

The device (technically) does not even need to be physically attached to the harness or connection. Take the chain link, or friction saver ring for example. Run the bight through, clip the biner through the bight, that's it. Gravity and the second bend in the rope (coming vertically up and out of the slot and back down) keeps the piece right there. Now, if you climb above your tie-in point you lose that second bend and the piece falls below you and out of reach, in accordance with gravity.

Again, don't use a chain link. An oval quick-link, stainless steel, is longer in profile, thinner in material diameter and works better. And is rated.

I have a design that just came to me recently, based on a quick-link and a rope thimble. Instead of the bight going through the quick-link and around the biner, the bight would go through the link, then pass over the countoured, 'teardrop' shaped thimble and then back through the link. Your connection would then go around the terminal bottom of the thimble. I believe the thimble can be successfully welded to the 'nut' on the screw-link, allowing you to open and close it to apply the rope. Here's a rough draft (very rough)....,

I've got a few different size and shapes of quick-links and a few thimbles. Lemme go out and see what I can pair up. Mebbe even fire up the welder.

Note: If I come up with anything, it is just a warm-up exercise for more practical devices. However, it will work to whatever degree and if the welder comes out and time gets sunk into it, the piece will be submitted to Dr. Gary's collection. There are no devices based on a steel thimble and a quick-link.

The piece I'm thinking of would look approximately like this:

I appreciate that, Newguy.

SRT-only, though. It might be a good idea if it leads to something more, if this thing offers some nugget of understanding. If not, the idea blows.

OK, I got jiggy with the welder today. Had to weld the hub on the power roller for the conveyor on my tree truck. Since the welder was out, creating what we'd come up with earlier that morning was not a stretch.

As you can see, the device is simple, but WAY too big. A hundred mm??? This idea gets whacked right there. SRT-only? Many dozens if not hundreds of those devices out there.

Ok, no captions on the images so, #1, measuring, #2, dry fit, #3 plasma torch to nibble out a bit of thimble for a proper fit, #4 perfect, ready to weld. #5 zap, #6 ZZZAAPPP, #7 nice bead, lemme weld the other side, #8 cleaned up with the mini grinding wheel, closed position (note tight tolerances) #10 open position.

I must admit, the inspiration for this piece came from these two pieces, both Russian creations.

The first one would do 1:1 doubled, 2:1 doubled and SRT. It has an multiple intrinsic lockoffs. Mebbe it should be called the multi-lockoff Yakov.

Anyway, I think the Yakov is too big for our needs, but worthy of keeping on the shelf. Good design.

Another mini-bollard device is #2. I really like the guts on this one. Clearly, it is an SRT device, but if two of them were mated together, and an intrinsic lockoff configured into it, a design along this line has possibilites.

That looks like a new version of a figure eight.

The large radius of the thimble seems to have advantages. Can you use that to ascend SRT? It looks like it would function similar to a GriGri or I'd in a RADS system.

Am I missing something?
