Now agree with me or don't but I keep my climbing setup pretty simple
These are the only 2 friction hitches I use.The tautline and the klemheist.they work for me and I aint changing no matter what hitch or mechanical device the come out with.I don't know about anyone else but I don't want to haul more than nessecary up a tree.while were on it though I climb tail tied and I have foot locked a single line.

Seems like for an 18 year old newbie you are already stuck in the mud!

Good thing we're not trying to change anyone here.

Here's a good place to use the chain link. When you need to get your bag swinging and dropping quick, just a chain link of extra weight helps a lot.

Time for a new throw line TM?

Thanks for the clarification on the name of the knot Gary I've been calling the unbraided VT a fench prussik for ages for some reason don't know why, the 6 wrap version is pretty much what I climb on all the time now, esp when on pulleys or FS.

Perhaps I'm not the only one who is confused about it? http://ozultimate.com/canyoning/knots/french_prusik/ this is what I tie using bee line with spliced eyes and what I see in the photo from Dan of Mark's set up above his hand ascender.

Heh, heh. Every few hundred shots I cut off a meter or so. Looks like it's about due.

Hey Boa, thanks for linking these referral sites. Keeps the thread rich.

Also, there is no intent to take over the tree climbing world and replace the hitch with devices, so none of youz needs to feel your manhood is in jeopardy.

This is just a mental exercise to go places no climbers have gone before. Actually, this is an exercise for my butt and two typing fingers that is keeping me from climbing at the moment.

The National Speleological Society convention is coming up soon. This design project may ramp up quite a bit, quite soon, especially if Elizabeth lets me take her laptop down. Fun with Photoshop, live, at the site of the physical presence of Dr. Gary's collection. It's like going to worship at Mecca. The inspiration should be flowing over the top.

Something Gary said about 6 pages ago....

Quote:
the idea of locking with a carabiner in a slot might be something to consider....or maybe not.....

This could be the holy grail....or maybe not..... but I am really curious as to what that thought was. Slot...., that's not a lot for us to go on, Gary.

Side note: The NSS Annual Convention is this week. If any of you are in the southeast region of Indiana July 23-28, you are invited to this event. I may even be leading a trip or something, but my core duty there, other than smashing the 300' vertical rope climb world record, is as recycling director. This is self-appointed, though.

The idea came from the Alptech A.B.S.

I'll be there with my gear collection on display. I'd like to meet some of you-all if you're there.

That one is what I've always seen called an "autoblock." To add to the confusion, my web site has a cut and paste error. I duplicated the Frenck Prusik page to get the layout for the autoblock page, and then changed everything except the page title. OOPS! Gotta fixit...hope I'm knot tablame ferthissun

I'm intrigued to see what this device will look like. I've only been climbing a while and never on anything but rope. I also want to know if anyone's been breaking records yet?

Well, Jim's whole point is that we have to invent it. We were both at the caving convention last week and he spent a lot of time looking over my vertical device collection, trying to piece together ideas. He showed me the rig he is using, made from a bunch of odds & ends held together by Adobe Photoshop . It really helped me understand better what he was looking for.

Well, things got more complicated. I was talking to Bob Thrun last week (the author of "Prusiking," he's been researching knots and their history). It seems that the French call "everything" an "autobloc." Still, if you're American and not French, then "autobloc" generally refers to only one specific knot.
