Haven't actually used one but an old boss of mine (from my rock climbing instructor days) was fond of his. I compiled some pictures and specs to add to this thread. The Petzl ID is a self-braking descender with an anti-panic function built in. Designed for rescue: lacks a gate Multi-functional handle allows the user to: - unblock the rope and control the descent with the hand on the braking side of the rope - move more easily on horizontal or low-angle terrain thanks to the button on the handle - to position himself while on the rope Anti-panic function is engaged if the user pulls too hard on the handle: the pivoting cam is released and automatically brakes to stop the descent Anti-error safety cam to reduce the risk of an accident due to incorrect installation of the device on the rope. The shape of the cam is designed to improve rope glide during an ascent. Pivoting cam makes it easier to take up the slack in the rope Can also be used to make a reversible haul system, and for short ascents (in conjunction with a FOOTPRO footloop and an ASCENSION handled rope clamp). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Potential for accidental opening of the side-plate When the device is not fully loaded, it is possible for other elements of the user's system (e.g. rope, CROLL or maillon rapide) to be positioned in such a way as to push on the safety catch and open the side plate. Always take care to prevent elements of your system and other objects from coming into contact with the safety catch. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Specifications For ropes between 11.5 and 13 mm in diameter Weight: 530 g Individually tested CERTIFICATION: CE EN 341 Class A NFPA 1983 G |

Here's a review: Great for Access/Rescue Date: April 19, 2007 Pros: Redundant, Safe, Easy to Learn & Use Cons: Ascending more difficult than ascenders "This is an amazing device for its function. We added them to Rope Access protocols for a client, and for rappelling, they are the safest device I have seen, redundant, easy to use and limited rope twist. While you can use them to ascend, it is difficult since you have to pull the rope upwards which tires out the arms a little - regular ascenders are still more efficient." |

Hey Devo, the I'd is physically a lot larger than the eddy, it's a pretty chunky device, so bear that in mind.

Well, they also sell the I'D in size Large, and Small. So you *can* get it in a smaller size, as the same device.

*Therrin staggers as he takes an arrow through the heart* Ahh, I stand corrected. You're right Trev, they're the same "size". HOWEVER! The grigri is a bit smaller, and works similarly. |
