Tie up one end of the rope and sliding your hands along it "milk" or "bleed" the outer core consistently over the inner core so no bunch ups occur.... only applicable to ropes with a core, in climbing lines New England High Vee has a core so can be milked. Braided ropes such as lowering ropes can be "milked".

I think the actual milking is more when the rope, by itself, bleeds down and the core is short. Let me explain. I saw a New England High Vee climbing line where the tail (spliced eye one end so always use one way around) was like 3m of flappy rope with no inner core there. The outer (sheeth for lack of a better word) had milked down. So in effect the rope was milked by use with a prussik, solution is cut off the end as it would be near impossible to reverse that situation. With larger lowering ropes I've never really had it happen anything like that but some people say they have. Is it going to happen if the tail of the rope is melted like with a hot knife joining it all? Maybe not, maybe that's why none of my ropes do it. Prussik is a good idea, just progress slowly feeling the rope and maybe use the prussik to capture where you are up to, the bigger problem is twist, you can get some nasty twisted up ropes.

when a rope has milked itself out, the core moves within the cover. most rope has a core inside the cover. while working a rope over a crotch, bollard, or other obstacle, the cover or core will stretch a little more or less then the other . this will cause a milking of the rope, some type of action should be made to take care of this small issue. you should hand milk the rope back as much as you can, than cut tape, whip, or melt the repaired end. some ropes milk more than others but its not a big issue. keeping the ends in shape is a good habit/ practice. working a frayed ended rope is a pita, if let go too long, its easy to loose good inches or even a foot or more of usable rope. keep it clean and be safe folks!
