Default time for Climbing line

so today one of the groundsman where i work decided to go nuts with the saw when he was limbing up some stuff i dropped andhe nicked my climbing line, right in the middle of my 200 ft longline of course

sparing you the details and the obsenaties i shouted at him from the tree, im in need of a new climbing line right now im using XTC fire line made by yale, its a 1/2" 13mm kern mantle,

ive been doing some looking around and i really dont see much difference in alot of the lines ive been looking at so perhaps you could help me out, what are the advantages and disadvantiges of the different styles, double braid, kern mantle, solid, 13 mm 11mm

i hear good things of the true blue and was thinking of taking it for a spin, any feed back would be great,

thanks

I dont wear gloves and like a 13mm softer rope, like Sampson or New England Blue Vee.

But it does get heavy however it doesn't get stuck in palm heads much either.

i have to agree with you on that ekka, and ill have to take your word on the palm, not to many of them outdoors in ontario, but 13 mm rope is alot easier to grab, i find i cant get a pair of gloves that i can grab onto the rope with and that will last longer then a week, so i have a tendency not to wear the unless im using a big saw, or if im working in the winter but i still take them off alot.

i didnt mention this before but this is a DDRT rope im looking for, not really big on the SRT yet

Like Eric I don't use gloves, have climbed on Blue and Gold Streak and XTC fire, really like them both...was lucky enough to be alloweed to mess around with an 11m line down in Geelong, even just playing found it hard to grip and suspect my hands would cramp if i used this diameter for work.

Hi Col. 2x 1ooft lines then eh! My xtc is showing signs of wear after 18mths and was going to go back to Marlow gecko as can't grip xtc with gloves either. They are good price at £80.00 with free rope bag. Would be nice to be able to test ropes out first at supliers! It being such crucial/personal part of equip'. U.K. weather update...torrential rain and hail stones right now. Spring has sprung!

I must have climbed on just about every arborist climbing line out there but that dot mea s**t because it all personal prefrence. We ca give you our opinions and may be some direction but you really need to get a hold of some different ropes and try them with your own set up.

Ok

24 strand

Advantages:
Light weight
Very smooth rope on prussic feel
Good for self tailing hitches
Not generally as stretchy as 16 strand
Good with mechanical devices

Disadvantages:
Possibly harder to grip*
Harder on your hands*
Chews prussic slightly quicker
IMO harder to splice
Some different brands bunch slightly when new

16 strand

Advantages:
Easy to grip due to larger diameter
Good for larger diameter prussics and 3 strand prussics

Disadvantages:
Heavy
Bulky knots
Fluffs up excessivly when used
Like a spunge when wet

If your a big bloke stick with the 13.5 16 strand, samson is easier to grip than fire i think.

The softest 24 strand is blaze, it runs real well and reacts well with all prussics.

Best of luck mate

Yea im actually climbing on it at the moment mate.

Its very good but not my favorite. Its very light, very very smooth and fast through the tree. Its best with softer prussics <10mm diameter.

Excellent as an access line! For footlocking especially.

Velocity used to come with a sticky coating that everyone hated thus putting many people off the rope but now they have it sorted out.

The rope feels quite hard and its tough on ya hands especially if your a big fulla. I dont wear gloves when i can help if but if you do wear gloves its great.

Chews prussics a bit but not too bad.

Not too much stretch, it feels like its around 5% but i dont know what the specs say. Velocity does not bunch at all.

Hope this helps! Cheers mate.
