Wow just OMG wow. I got dizzy just watchin could not believe the risks of a free climb like that. I,d go, but way slower finding a way to secure and I,d like to pak a base pop chute cuz climbing down is way harder than going up. After a while down a long decent I find ya feet and hands can get confused lift one let go the wrongun. You gotta be trustin those welders were good? 2 hands on a dinky tack welded rod. Check the youtube comments about it ha ha |

I recall talking to a Hydro worker that climbed a 1000 ft tower the first time. He put his ring from the belt onto the safety pole to help stabilize himself, but when he got to 500 feet, there was a crossbar to anchor the pole, and the only way to get past it, was to climb down, take the ring off, and climb back up - free climbing. Obviously didn't carry biners.(He would have had to buy it himself, and that would just be a dumb idea.) And he said after that, no matter what size the tower, he just free climbs it -- no big deal. He can have that job. Trees are tall enough for me. I have no desire to climb a third of mile just to be able to say I work on communication towers and stand taller than most anybody not in an airplane!

Alright Guy's how are things, Im new to this forum and enjoying what im reading, Just got my self a wee stihl 034 in bits and peices in a box for $40, rebuilt it and cleaned it and it worked!!. getting back to the subject. when i was working in the uk i was a sparkie working on the telecomunication mast and i use to enjoy climbing the 100m+ but with all the gear on, occasionally we use to work in the church bell tower and all we would have on is the work positioning belt for doing the lights as there was no fall arrest installed exept for the clip on's on the ladders. it use to get abit hairy with the bats and pigeons flying about. Had to give it up when i came over as the certs were worth jack and i didn't have the money to redo them. Cheers anyway Gav |

Link in OP doesn't work so I think I found a similar/same video: YouTube - Stairway to Heaven No fkn way I would ever climb this high, especially with no attachments! Just watching the video I was feeling a bit scared/anxious. You can just imagine how it would feel the first few seconds of free fall. |

I suppose if lightning strikes, they are dead, and someone else has to climb up and get them down? Or would that be a helicopter rescue? I notice at the very top he doesn't hang on at all before he clips on a biner.
