Default SRT tie off

I am new to rope climbing and just wanted to know what is the best way to tie off the rope for an SRT climb?

Also, if you are going to lower pieces of the trunk using a block, how do you pros suggest tying the rope to the piece to be lowered?

Thanks,

when you want to tie on to a block, you can either use a safe working load(SWL) lowering sling tied on to a descent karabiner, or use a timber hitch,or clove hitch. If I am feeling lazy or the peice to be lowered isn't that big or has plenty of stubs then a biner clipped onto the lowering rope does the job. It often depends on the size of the bit to be lowered.

Figure of 8, and then two biners, directed opposite, gates opposed, one of which is a steel triple lock.

That's excessive, though. You could use an aluminum triple-lock in place of the steel one.

This is a picture from the past. Now any rope I get has factory splices, so omits the knot. Also you should practice tensionless methods, it's good practice, but for the utter simplicity, just the choker around the tree.

A cow hitch with a timber hitch flair at the end & a little excess eye length makes it tensionless. You still do the dual biner setup, though there's no tension whatsoever from the eye-to-biners-to-working end.

S'pose if you wanna trust your life on a running bowline, many do. There's a lot of ways to anchor your SRT rope, a lot of different knot setups. It just needs to be absolutely, positively bombproof.

Rigging the SRT line through a belay device is keen, allows a ground person to lower you if you were to have some incident where you would need to be lowered by the guy on the ground.

The critics would say using two biners of approximately equal size would be preferable to one being bigger than the other.

Running bowline for SRT.

Running bowline or half-hitch and running bowline.

Beware of clove hitches for lowering. They should be tied-off with two half-hitches to prevent the clove hitch from rolling out.

Here's an SRT tie-off, one where you can be lowered down by the ground person. Make sure you have plenty of rope on the ground and don't forget the stopper knot at the end.

There are a lot of different ways you could do it. It just has to be absolutely, positively failsafe.

If you want a lowering system in conjunction with your SRT for rescue it has to be BACKED UP! Dont know what i mean then ask.

Like TM says you must be sure to have enough rope through the lowering system to get you to the ground even if your at the top and a stopper knot in the end.

If your using a sling to tie off with, choke it and remember it must be a rated climbing sling.

DONT use any rigging gear!

As treeco and southsoundtree says, a running bowline thats backed up (same as you would use in you climbing system if you use knots ha) is really simple and effective.

Hope you know the SRT rules and understand the dangers of tree climbing.
