Default Squished fingers under lanyard

My last noob question (thanks to those who replied to the other two).

Climbing practice is going OK, except: whenever I flip the lanyard up a little, and my weight pulls on it, my fingers get squished between the tree and lanyard. Not a big problem at first, but they get sore after a while.
Maybe I need better gloves?

Gloves aint got nothing to do with that, just dont keep sticking your fingers in between the rope and the tree, then BAM, no more squishy time.

It sounds like you have your body too close to the trunk or get a stiffer pole strap.

You need to loosen your pole lanyard, there should be a good 8"-12" between your body and the tree, then put your hands on boths sides between your body and the tree[the gap,,not under the line between the tree]and as you go up you you lean in and flip your line[its all in the wrist]up.

I did that a couple of times when I started cos I was double wrapping my flipline (going twice around the trunk.) Are you using a flipline or a polestrap?
