Default Splicing safety blue, almost

I'v been playing around with putting some eye splices in some old safety blue, i can get most of it done except the last bit where the cover needs to be draged through the rope, point c to point d if you will (see sampson rope splicing guide)
Samson
(16 strand)

Has anyone tested their splice's, i ask because the eye part of the splice has no core.

Just wondering, why are you using Samson's splicing guide instead of New England's?

MTS

Your attempt to splice used safety blue raises a couple of interesting points. New rope is far easier to learn on than used as it has yet to loaded and thus the braid hasn't settled as the excess slack gets milked out of the line. Safety blue is about the easiest to learn on, Yale XTC one of the more difficult 16 strands to splice - almost impossible when used. Brion Toss has an excellent video on splicing 16 strand and double braids - 'Making Your Own Eye Splices'. As for local expertise Scott Sharpe is one of the best bar none. He can be contacted through Cannings in Melbourne.

Re ; lack of core in the eye. The core in 16 strand is non load bearing, it is used only to keep the rope round and firm and is not needed in the eye. Without a core 16 strand tends to flatten or square off - not good for friction knot control or handling in general.

Hope this helps :thumbs

Thanks mac, we have always been told that the core does very little. but it must do somthing as it is quiet strong.

I spent some time looking at what i had done and then it hit me. i found the right bit of wire about 1m long a folded it in half, it made all the difference.

Who has broken and recorded the results (breaking strength loss) of their splices, that is the question.

i splice all my own eyes. i use to splice 16 strand but i have moved to more modern rope. i have never measured bks. i like to show other climbers by taking a spliced rope with bowline on one end to a tree via a loopie and other end on a steel krab to the truck and show em what brakes first. the splice will win every time. i am a big velocity fan and i can splice about 2 eyes per hour. i will replace any knot i can with a splice
