So whats the current thinking on climbing on "homemade" splices? When i was schooled it was a no no, but then i remember we were using 3 strand nylon fliplines we spliced? Alot of companys splice there own 3 strand for rigging, if that breakes at the wrong time somone is going to get injured or killed. If rope companys didnt want us to splice their "climbing line" then why put instructions on their public website. yeah i know its from another country. I have a spliced split tail that i use for as part of a rope guide and now that the little bit of paper has fallen off it looks just like the splices i've done. well the whipping is neater but you know what i mean. Thanks

Splicing your own 3 strand seems to be just fine as its not that hard to make it secure and sometimes its your only choice on site when the ropes breaks. Its when you start getting into the climbing lines like 16 strand, thats the ones you go no no to.

i recently encountered this very problem. gear checking for competitions is the only time your ever really gonna get hasseled. if they know what they are talking about they will ask you the splice you have performed and the measurements and check out your taper. if they dont they either dont pass it or dont even notice. the guys that know what they are on about would prefer to have some evidence on how your splices perform, ie testing on a breaking bed or at least using a load cell for use over 2.2t. as of right now, i am unaware of any rule in competition that does not allow you to climb on your own splices as long as you have followed the manufactures guidelines to splicing that particular rope and diameter. if anyone has heard any different then let me know cos all my gear apart from my rope ive spliced myself.

It would not be hard to get some of your splices tested, height safety places have them. And maybe new splices you could get checked up to SWL and they could document it. The local guy here said that they cant "break" stuff only test it, if the rope breaks it will stuff the $$$ machine.

Well even some of the supposed "experts" who claim to be certified factory splicers don't even know the proper splices for every rope, so what hope have you got. A New England certified splicer here in Australia had never heard of the correct splice for New England FLY as provided by New England New England " The FLY " Kernmantle Splice and proceeded to have a hissy fit thinking it was some kind of homemade grizzly splice The rope owner was told by him not to climb on it! He thought where the tail of the external jacket was stitched down was "the" splice itself! Duuhhhh...Moral of the story.. be careful who you listen to about splicing! |
