Thanks Eric, It takes about half an hour to do one splice and ten minutes to whiplock it so the AP e2e usually takes me about an hour and the pulley saver takes about 2hours

do you mean the shrink tube to cover whipping? You can get that through treetools.co.nz and probably honeybro's, yale, samson, also try plumbers and sparkeys but I don't think there shrink tube has the glue on the inside, so once shrunk around rope it could come loose.

You can get clear plastic hose from hardware shops, I use this on the large eye of my RG to add more stability

Hope this helps

Fantastic links, Videos, just a great thread in general.
I have heard the rumor:

"even the worse spliced rope is better then the best knot... ..."

Any thing to add to the above quote?

That quote is total bollocks mate. A good splice may well preserve most of the breaking strength of a rope but a real poor one may not hold F All.

I think it depends if the correct instructions of the splice are followed...

an example could be someone does a class1 DB splice, they create an eye in the tail of the rope but the throat of the eye is lumpy and not a smooth taper, this splice will still lock and only tighten under load, as the instructions were followed, bury lengths, cross over point etc etc, the lumpyness in the throat is just cosmetic and doesn't effect how the splice works.

But if someone were to do the same splice and adjust bury lengths and miss vital parts of creating the splice essentially weakening the splice's strength, then yes I would agree with Brown, but if all instructions are followed and someone says "its a bad splice" just because it doesn't have a smooth taper doesn't necessarily mean the splice is weak.

Another example is when splicing a locking brummel splice on single/hollow braid rope, once the lock has been made you don't have to bury the tail .. its just to make it look nice

I guess what i'm saying is, if the the correct instructions are followed for the splice that is been made and that the splice is the right type for the rope been spliced then a splice will be stronger then a knot

^ Naked eye lock brummel with the rope coating plastic glue to cover it.

Yes Martin this will hold the pulley sheaves as original. Im in the process of breaking one as the bend ratios here are very tight so will have to see, i would'nt recommend it to be honest.
