Default Splice Testing

Hi everyone. I just learned eye splice double braid class 1. My first attempt I have made a dog leash with 3/8 new england line I bought at hardware store. My GOAL is to make a SRT climbing lanyard similar to the one pictured in the recent thread. But before I dangle my life on my splice, how do you all test them if a proper facility is not available? I was thinking of making a length of rope with the intended line for lanyard, then putting the splice end to a tree with a huge webbing sling then tying a bowline in the other end (same bowline i use to secure my insertion point while SRT climbing) to the back of a 10 ton articulated loader and pulling it until it snaps SOMEWHERE...and it will snap it's a huge machine. would I be safe to assume that if it breaks at the bowline or the body of line and NOT at my splice that it is safe to climb on? Im gonna use tachyon (I know it's a special splice all it's own with the core removed). Here's a picture of the first splice I did for dog leash. Thank you for your input-Steve

That's a nice splice.

The worst splice beats the best knot in strength. Your idea for the test is OK, but going to 5000lb pull is enough.

haha that video is nuts! thanks for the feedback, hearing the worst splice/best knot thing makes me way more comfortable. I just didn't know if there was any tricks of the trade/rules of thumb you experienced guys knew about. thanks again

Hi there,

I splice all my own gear and a few other people's gear, to make sure that my splicing is up to scratch, every 6-8months i will get a bunch of my splices break tested on a testing machine and get a certificate of test with the results to get an average break... hope this helps you out..

nice work on the splice in the pic, looks good

Hi guys, first attempt with Tachyon unsuccessful. That cover is really tight. I'm gonna try again after work if I get time. also: anybody know the proper name for the clear heat shrink tubing and/or where good place to buy it. Thanks

so maybe I suck at this but I could absolutely not splice tachyon with a basic/regular 7/16" fid, had to rig an improvised tool with a 1/4" piece of aluminum stock and a 1/16" wire. does anybody use brion splicing wand? seems like this would make the job waaaaay easier, I just didnt want to spend the $ cuz I don't need to splice much I just wanted to experiment to make my own lanyard. tucking the core was the only part that gave me a fit with a basic samson fid, maybe I was doing something wrong but it was ridiculously tight. I had to end up pulling the core through with a thin wire but this took forever to crimp and file down to slide through cleanly?without damaging any fibers...burying the whole splice was a workout too though had to use a come-along to tension the line while I milked it. here's a pic of my first and maybe last tachyon eye splice for my srt lanyard. It held no problem or slip at all when testing it I was cranking the hell out of it with a 2-ton cable puller on an additional 2:1 reduction so I have no idea what load I put on it but it was definitely alot so I feel good about climbing with it. thanks for all your help on the forum

The best place to buy heat shrink is jaycar. They have a large varitey of colours. I use piano wire to slice my ropes. Its much easier to pull your core through than push.
