There are a lot of good web tutorials about splicing 16 strand climbing line. Samson has it on their website, so does Yale, and maybe some other brands too. Yale ahs a very good set. The rope splicing tools are universal, so with one kit, every rope could be spliced.

I have finally got my splicing sorted. I didnt find it easy learning to splice. It takes time to actually understand how it works and remember you cant see whats going on internally so make sure you get it right!

In regard to the kit, its not really an issue. You can use al sorts of alternative stuff to splice. Example

- wire as your fid, i have piano wire i use and it works really really well

All i use as splicing kit my kit is
- splicing manual/instructions
- a ruler
- marker
- chainsaw file with smooth rounded pointed end or fork with 1 prong for extracting the core
- wire fid 30 cm long or so, fine gauge wire wrapped around a carabiner
- a couple of slings and carabiners
- gloves sometimes

Total cost.... $20 maybe

Result....Same

Then i have stitching needles and either really think whipping twine or just builders twine. Thin whipping twine has been proven to weaken rope strength.

I splice with a mattress needle and a dull point needle.usually I can do 3 strand with just my hands and some electrical tape.

Yea you can pretty much use anything just as long as its NOT cutting or damaging rope fibres.

Ha i reckon splicing 3 strand is easy as tieing a knot just about.
