Does anyone have any experience splicing an eye onto this rope? I've been using the Samson splicing manual and made dozens of splices but this rope seems to be different. I've followed the proper splice guideline (Double Braid, Class 1) and have been unable to spice this stuff after several attempts. Anyone have any insight? |

Great, thanks. ![]() The problem is when you need to insert the core back into the cover and it needs to pass itself. This would be from X to Z in the graphic (the colored dots are there for simplicity). It seems that there simply isn't enough room under the cover for the core to go from X to Z. I even tried using a smaller fid but without any success. I was reading some material written by Brian Toss and he stated that if you're ever trying to force part of the splice through then something is wrong. So yes, something is wrong.

Yes, its very tight, but there is enough room. what helps me is soaking the rope in water fer a few Min's and rather than forcing the tuck i will lightly shock load the rope by hand. this is done by tyeing the tied end to a pole or some stable obj. like a trailer hitch, grab the throat and jar the rope. after every few jars bend and bend and twist the throat, tap with a rubber mallet, and repeat the shock loading till x meets z or whatever. Brion T. is 100% correct about forcing the splice but you do need to use some good strength while you bury the splice. the more you bend and twist the splice the less strength it will take to complete the final bury. i very seldom ever use the mallet. remember to lock stitch the splice and wear they rubber palm atlas gloves cause splicing is harsh on the hands. i can pump out a dbl braid splice in a Lil under a half hour without rushing. good luck and happy splicing

Gunslinger, don't be afraid to improvise a bit. I use liquid hand soap on the core when I am trying to bury it, and it helps noticeably. Putting tension on the rope, either by shock loading as WLL suggests, or using a fixed load from a come-along, will help to shrink the core and allow you to milk the cover towards the eye. The Samson instructions tell you what to do; they are wholly inadequate for telling you how to do it.

Yup improvise is what I did. First I took Samson's advice and fashioned a long wire fid out of a piece of 1/8" electrician's snake. Then I took WLL advice and wet the rope and WLL/Moray's advice and tensioned the core. I'm happy to say that the combination of all three methods worked.
