"On Rope" by Padgett and Smith is a great resource.

The Ashley Book of Knots shows over 4,000 knots.

'The Tree Climbers Companion' is a good book for climbers.

Pete

This link is to a place in Brisbane that makes double braid lowering rope but not 3/4. It's not as strong as the Samson stuff you get from Arborlink but about 1/2 price, however no 3/4.

Rope Online - Polyester Double Braid - White With A Colour Fleck Pair

Here's New Age Arbor's ropes, they're in Melbourne but they'll freight free for orders over $275 ... note the 3/4 double braid is $12.50 per metre.

Arbor Warehouse sells Samson 3/4 double braid, it's 9300kg ave break strength, prices only show per 200' but looks cheaper than the other mob.

Rope +

And here's their pages on rope bags

The 3/4" Samson bull line that I have is really a beast. One hell of a rope.

Glad I looked in here - you did post the link to animated knots.

It was on your own site that I saw that first - right?

I had added it to my links to.

Now I don't need to start a thread.

A splice is between 90% and 100%

Of course has to be done right.

All knots reduce rope strength, 35% sounds about right for bowline, worst is the square knot, 50%!

Best is the figure 8 and butterfly ... ironically also the easiest to tie, darned bullet proof that thing.

If you are using running bowlines to pull trees or spar over with trucks/machinery etc would be wise to have a clevis shackle in there so no rope on rope, also you can take 2 turns around the spar then the bowline ... it will take some heat off the knot.

Knots can reduce rope strength a lot more than you think, bowline - upto 40%

A good splice will be 95 to 100%.

Yea ekka is right, a half hitch before your final knot is about 85% efficent. (15% strength loss)

I generaly use a clove hitch with 2 half hitches but from time to time I do a clove hitch with a bowline finish.

so the bowline snapped at 60% interesting. should we then use this percentage as the bench mark for our rigging safety percentages?

Yes, in rigging applications always discount the SWL by weaknesses in the system.

That's why I like splices and loops (knotless rigging), you retain 90% of the SWL.
