Default Rookie Question - Rope\Harness storage

OK guys, We have all been told that we don't step on our ropes, let petrol get to them, use them as bull lines, keep them off the dirt, etc etc etc but i have a rookie question. In my ute i have two tool boxes. One for saws and the other for climbing equipment. Santa brought me a stump grinder which means one tool box needs to go in order to fit the grinder on the back. This means ill be storing my harness etc in the same box as my saws so my question is do petrol fumes affect your health of your rope/harness. Both the 2 stroke and oil are stored externally to the tool box (please be gentle with your answers)

Yes,it can hurt your ropes, espically if it gets spilled on them it can reduce the breaking strength quite a bit.Is there somewhere else you can put your ropes and harness like in the cab of your truck and in your basement?

I'd guess that if he could store them in his basement that it would have nothing to do with his transportation question.

Personally... I have a LARGE duffel bag that I got from Blackhawk Industries which I store my harness, spikes, wire-core, and climbing rope in. That way it's all in it's own duffel bag and I can move it around as needed. It's 1000 denier balistic nylon so it's extremely durable.

I had thought some studies came out which kind of denied that stepping on ropes really does much harm. For the most part we didnt do it out of respect and old-school mentality. I wouldnt want to dump gas and oil all over my ropes, but i dont think that just the fumes would really harm them as long as your mix is sealed in a normal gasoline container with a screw-tight cap.

Consider a portable storage tote for all of your climbing gear though.

Honestly... The fumes they are going to encounter in the boxx won't hurt em. As long as ya don't spill it on em. If they do happen to get sloshes on just wash em. Put em In a bag first bfore thhey go in bin with fuel and u will be fine

Chances are something could spill. Are you able to separate the one bin remaining? I mean put a barrier between the climbing and chainsaws...

My plan was to keep the saws on the bottom of the tool box and throw a canvas cover over them. Ill then keep my ropes in individual rope bags. I have found a spot behine the drivers seat which ill store my harness in a backpack. Fuel and oil is stored externally on the tool box so its really only the saws which could be a source of fluid leaks. The only downside isa i need to unpack eveything to get a saw out
