Climbed a big ol' (60ft.) Sweet gum (liquidambar sp.) recently that had been headed 20-25 yrs. ago. It grew some sketchy, rotten codominants about 20' long, 10"-12" diameter. Restorative pruning time. It was in a back yard and all was to be roped to a garden area below. I broke out the rock climbing rope (10.5mm) and tied an anchor below the two stems. Climbed up about 10ft. and with a handsaw, cut/roped each spar to itself, not tied in to either stem. I was looking at whipping 20 feet the whole time but better than the alternative (crater). What do ya'll think? What would you do? |

Pics would be good, hard to say. Good idea on the lower tie ins. I removed a liquid amber today, 8 bloody service wires through/near it! was on the fenceline and had 4 wires to the neighbour and 4 to the house I was in, and it had lots of crappy codominants. I natural crotch rigged it and took the wraps up the top ... that reduces the shock on the tree.
