Default Pickit System

Was out taking down two tall skinny Striped Maples the other day and a long drag over real bad muddy ground. So instead of having my guys stand in mud and water I put together a Pickit System for a zip line to go to. Reason for doing this was that there was nothing to anchor off to. Was woundering if any of you guys out there ever used this method. I think it is highly useful but under rated. I used it doubled as to get 1400 lbs out of it. I will post a pic later. If you not sure what I am talking about, it involves 3, 4ft long 3/4inch stakes hit into the ground with a rope wraped around all of them (stakes are inline with each other). Before hitting the middle stake in you turn the stake with the rope on each side of it to get the rope to twist on it's self. This is what keeps the system tight. Anyway not sure if it is or was at one time a practice that anyone uses besides me.

I've seen the stake system before.
The design may have come from the military, can't recall.

Long time ago (seems like a lifetime ago really) was shown a ground anchor system for descending cliffs without trees, or rocks for anchor points, very useful in snow conditions. Guessing your picket sys is similar.

Nice vid mate, seemed to work well for you, quick and simple...that was one hell of a rock to have sitting in the middle of the yard!! Did they put that there or was there similar in other yards?

Thats what I was thinking too> It would have been great if I had something to put around it, but I left all my rock climbing stuff at home never leave home without it.... What I like about it is you can build it to hold more weight smoothly if you think your going to need it after starting. The three main that I use is fo weights of 700lbs, 1400lbs and 1900lbs.

I know the military still teaches it I think they teach what you showed. I got this way of doing it from rope rescue classes that I had taken. But it is an international standerd class so I balive you could find it in a book someplace, I will have to look.

Well, I'll admit it then.

I dont get it?

I get the fact you needed an anchor for the speedline, but what's with all the rope twisting and the pound rating idea?

Pounds on the speedline, pounds on the anchor, pounds on each stake? .... I dunno, I'd just Kanga them out.

Was it worth the effort or gains made or was it more of a demonstration?

compealtly worth the effort. I wish I had a Kanga to do it with But non the less I dont... The weight rating is for what the whole system will hold. As for the rating it goes by how many pickits you will use ie: If you use 1:1:1 in a row it will hold 700 lbs, if you use 2:1:2 (like on the vid) it gives you 1400lbs. You can also use 3:1:3 that will give you 1900lbs. The reason for twisting the rope with the center pickit is to tighten down the rope, it is much easyer doing it this way then by hand or pulley. The twists in the rope wont weakin the rope much do to there is no bites in the rope with it.

Now there are other ways to make it stronger by adding another system to the rear of the first one and lashing them together.I wouldnt bother at that point it would be getting to be a bit much. The main reason I like to use it, is due to the fack it is a fast non bulky and reliable way to never have to worry about having an anchor point even when you canot get a kanga in. I know it doesnt happen much but when it does its well worth it.
Boa I think it was there when they moved in. I cant see Doc Bruse wanting it there, plus I think I would of had to put it there
