Found this new friction hitch very similar to the 'blakes' I tried it yesterday and it seemed to work fine, Anyone have any thoughts on this hitch? Last edited by Eric Frei; 2nd November 2007 at 10:58 PM. Reason: Link deleted, see posts below for description. |

Ah, the all newly invented Horse Hitch. Hey, I use a Blakes with 5 wraps, it's called the Buck Rogers Hitch when you tail tuck in the last two but if you tail tuck in the last 3 it's called the Buzz Lightyear hitch. What about the Sheetbend with a bunch of wraps ... The Sheethouse Bend. Argh, who gives a sheet. Interesting, good on you Tim.

I found that knot interesting too. I like how it is loaded from it's top. I still haven't climbed with it yet.

Ok, I tried this hitch again today on a more technical rigging removal, longer climb, it was terrible, the spine of the hitch does not work in the same way as the Blakes, the Blakes just feels more secure and makes a lot more sense as a working hitch.

Blakes is great in a workingt environment where you throw the line over a crotch and get to it. During recreational climbs, where I have the crotch rigged as a falsie with say, a micro pulley and a DMM Roller both, the line is just loose as a goose. At that point I have had the Blakes fail (not fail, falter) up high, or sometimes even from the very start. 5 wraps is better, for sure. But a VT or a Schwabisch is best when you don't have Mother Nature's friction thru the crotch. Of course if you use Safety Pro or any 12 strand the Blakes works like a dream.

OK, heads up for those trying to open the link. If you hit the quote button on that post it will reveal the links true identity. Then copy/paste it. The ?????? is called word censoring and changes letters to symbols etc.

(Odd looking knot, kinda like an inverted Blake's.)
