Default Need Tree climbing info

I've been doing a bit of Koala rescue work up at the Victorian fires over the past week and one of the problems we had was getting up the tree to get them down. We did have tree climbers come in a few times but it usually takes a day or two and by then the Koalas have moved and can't always be found. I've done a little bit of climbing before but would like to find out more about climbing trees. Can anyone recomend any good websites, books or people to talk to?

Is the "Tree Climbers Companion" a worth while read?

Is there a certification that can be done to keep the DSE happy?

The tree climbers companion is definatly worthwhile,so is the fundamentals of general treework by Gerald beranek, which can be bought here, A Tree Story: books and videos by Gerald F Beranek .I also highly recomend having an experianced climber teach you the ropes and tricks of the trade, espically srt climbing, even if you aren't climbing to prune or remove trees, its still very dangerous so having an experianced climber on site is a good idea, until you become acustomed to climbing.

I can honesly say, if you only had enough money to buy one book on tree climbing, The Tree Climbers Companion would be the one I recommend. I've been climbing just over a year now and I still learn something every time I pick it up.
Not that reading can really make up for hands-on experience and training, but it's a good start.

G'day,

I can help you out with the Tree Climbers Companion Book, $27.95 with free postage in Aust.

It will teach you heaps, along with alot of good help from people on this site.

I can also put you in touch with some wildlife rescuers that got some climbing training and help with 2 full kits of gear from me.

They are interested in people to practice climbing with.

Strength to body weight is an important component. Fitness and aerobic capacity should be a precursor.

If you want to be professional and safe you must always work as a team with a buddy system approach. Two climbers is a sensible way of having continuous back up should anything untoward occur. never climb alone or unassisted by having no one nearby. Two climbers is essential for building each others confidence, looking out for each other having a second set of eyes , ears, gear and having the all important, rescue back up, climber.
