I stumbled across this 25 years ago when I goofed a tie job,,, but it worked. Only last year found it had a name Figure 8 slip knot. I got to say as a quick tie non binding non creepin and stronger than a bowline its a beauty up trees. When I was top of my game I could do it one handed. Posted here to share have a crack see what you think. FM 3-97.61 Chapter 4 Heres some pictures of how to and some break testin I did. In essence it broke after a bowline and was still an easy untie after 28KN. ![]() This is a rope breakin test bed awe-inspiring to watch rope under slow tension till it pops. Often the core goes 1st but I saw smoke then a shot gun crack with a few biguns. If your not been to a rope factory do try. Amazing place mystery machines spin out threads from reels to make complex weaves. ![]() ![]() |

I used to be a big fan of all variations of the figure 8, visually it gives immediate reassurance when tied correctly vs tied wrong as opposed, say, to some variants of the bowline which can look somewhat right when tied incorrectly but still be wrong. This is important as a lifeline. The bowline is the king of knots though, mainly due to its ability to be easily unknotted after being heavily loaded. I never appreciated that quality as a rock climber, but when I had a job as a deckhand on a tug with 4" rope being used to maneuver 100,000 tonne cargo ships it suddenly became pretty useful. If you are going to load your rope to the point of it exploding then being able to untie the knot later isnt of a whole lot of value. If I were going to load the knot to destruction I'd be more likely to go for a fishermans friend slip knot since the '8' hanging off the side of your slip knot does nothing anyway. I'd bet money on the fishermans friend failing at a higher point (though probably in the same place), and a bowline failing about 15% lower. |

Welcome Imagineero, your right about bowline failin 15% below the slip 8 at the rope factory we tested to both to breakin and that was the result. I was surprised. The slip 8 was still an easy untie after extreme weight I reckon even better than a bowline.

Quick limb tie to lower handy as you can flip over to away limb points n tie loose end then slide up. I would not use as a life line knot. Very handy as a puller as will not chinch up even under heavy load. Try n see.

Ok I will try but need to get the billy lids to show me how to make copy n post a utube so could take a while. It simplicity in tie make it fast and neat, so simple I still don't trust it in big over the roof loads so flip a turn in the tail. Going to Dreamworld next week to the digvidcam will get dust off. |

Food is major expensive in there, no taps or drink fountains, you have to buy everything so we pack an esky with cold bricks and go out to the car for lunch etc. Sneak in the occasional water bottle with your towels/backpack and stuff ..... stuff snacks/lollies in your pockets etc.

Ok Gablee ta thats the knot, odd I tie a different way but it comes out the same. As I use to handle limbs etc I'll flip the end over a limb twist the eye and pass though the tail in the vid he ties it in line but gets same outcome. Try an see put it on a stump and pull with your 4x4 it dont cinch n lock up and on tests breaks after a bowline. He using for life line nup would not do that if ya get it wrong you got nuthin where a muffed bow line will still have ya held. Aww sweet jesus I planned the trip to the worlds with ma kids to avoid the crowds and tv tonite says its schoolies week next week.. sniff sigh ggrrr |

We need to see it tied onto a limb. The way Galbee shows it I cannot see many of us trying to shove a tree limb through the loop then cut the limb off the tree. We need to see both ways of tying it.
