Looking for ideas to get the twist out of my 1/2" climbing line. I use a Fig 8 for descending and usually alternate ends for each climb. Have never "studied" the way the rope is twisting thru the "8" so it's probably just luck it's evened out. Until the other day, when I forgot the 8, and used a muenter on a biner. Never actually did that before, except for practice at about 6' off the ground. After 50 feet it put a nasty twist in the rope that is tough to fully remove. |

I usually tie one end to something at a park and go for a long walk. Hanging it from a tree weighted on the bottom also works, even if double just weight each end. Funny you mention it just this week mine got rather twisted too, but it doesn't sound like it got as badly twisted as yours.

Seems like I practiced coming down on a muenter before and didn't have this much twist. So now I'm thinking it was the type of biner I happened to use. OK, I'll try your suggestions. Are there any good descenders that won't twist rope but are not big and heavy like the Petzl rack? It would need to work on 1/2" line. By the way, I sure have enjoyed your various videos and tips! |

The Gri Gri seems favoured by many. Just not sure about the 1/2" rope, you need to test it coz arb rope is 12.5mm but I have seen it used.

| http://tinyurl.com/2b8dkwj Trango Cinch is more compact than a grigri (although grigri has loads of different apps.) id probably reccomend a robot, nice & simple inline device. http://tinyurl.com/28nrcp8 Last edited by Jeff Darby; 15th October 2010 at 08:57 PM. |

I use a gri gri on my pole belt with single braid new England hi vee which is 1/2 inch works fine prior to that I used it srt with the same rope works great with a hand ascender and pulley for a z haul system, you could also use the figure 8 above a shunt to have a nice controlled decent system. Also It may take some of the tension away from the 8 giving you less of a twist.

Leave the fig 8 in the kit bag and climb on a prussik! ![]() I'm not big on mechanical devices, less clanging while aloft the better. And I'm not talking about my plums! ![]() ![]() When I have found a lot of twist in my rope I generally just set it up a large tree and let it untwist itself. |
