I just spliced two footlock prusiks out of the stuff this evening. I have a fid kit from Samson, but you can use about anything that is similar in diameter to the diameter to the line your splicing, and is tapered and smooth. I'll just say that you need to pay super close attention if you do any cutting (ie when doing your taper) I ended up cutting a cover thread and had to redo an entire splice plus cut off a foot of line. Other than that, pretty cut and dry stuff.

Thanks FlashD. Do you know anything about using piano wire and a carabiner?. Someone told me about that sometime ago.

Well, I've never used piano wire, but I have tried guitar string. Can't say it worked real well... If you give it a shot, let me know how it goes.

Mate, just buy some decent tools.

Only thing you need to make is a wire fid, made up of piano wire - 16 gauge or similar and an anchor - carabiner or wood handle.

You dont need to buy a expensive kit, just the size fids you require.

Plain (not wound) guitar string - for pulling small line through small places.

For 12 strand hollow braid i've been using an old pen, i just removed the back and ink. Its shaped just like a fid. I tape the end of the rope to a point and then place a little take to hold it in the pen case. Works like a charm, no problems so far.

I've been using a piece of 1/8" electricians snake bend in half to make a wire fid. Has two bent over points on the ends to grab the rope, and fastened with a piece of tape. Works great on Stable Braid.

SJ, do you have more information/photo's on how you finished this splice? Looks great and I would like to give it a shot. I'm going to restring my Ibanez so I'll have some strings to play with.

Gunslinger:

While looking for something else I 'stumbled' accross the following link. I shows exactly how I made my eye in a throw line with a wire fid.

BTW; I recommend twisting an 'eye' in the wire fid - make it a little easier.

Hope it helps,
Jack
