Hi all, I'm still a novice. Last time I was climbing, I slid down a ways and my hands got dragged against the tree. I had thick gloves, but still got skinned knuckles. Anyway, I saw a tv show ('Dirty Jobs') and the host was climbing a telephone pole, and his lanyard had some sort of loops attached. His hands went in the loops and could adjust the lanyard. With no drag-against-the-bark worries. So: are those hand grips a standard item (ie that I can buy)? Or do I just find some nylon straps and make it myself? Thanks, Dan |

Dan the man, improve your technique and you'll be fine. Also try a double wrap of the flip line around the pole/palm, also helps and holds for kick outs. That's the trouble with us "old school" blokes, we do not spend as much money on stuff because we see less need for it and know how to overcome without over spending. I like the KISS principal. Seen the young guys climbing these days, more shit on their belt than in Steptoe and sons garage!

I've been doing the method where you wrap the lanyard around the tree (figure 8?) so I don't slip far. But when climbing I pull on the lanyard pretty hard to keep myself vertical, so my fingers wrap around the rope, so they get squished when I slip. It's probably just my lack of technique. The guys in videos always make it look easy. |
