Default Efficient and Consistent Knot Tying

During the winter, I sharpen the knot skills. I'm always looking for the method that drives consistency.

I've been guilty of not paying attention while I do the final threading. In other words, I've tied it wrong (while talking). Most use the wraps around the thumb. I find that if I do that on a bight and wrap the final thread over my thumb that I can tie, chew and talk. Obviously I finish with a moment of silence and check my work - each and every time.

Here's what I've done to my method for tying the Blakes Hitch.

The lesson that I've learned is that many coiled friction hitches tie nicely on a bight. Here's what I've done with my Prusik method:

One handed stuff here - if that strikes your fancy:

Unfortunately, there's not an edit function here. The second paragraph needs to start by referring to the Blakes Hitch. THEN it makes more sense. I'll be more careful on my future posts.

Nicely done,

I guess it's time for me to work my knots.

Here's the key to preventing a mistake in tying the Blakes hitch. Run "5" across the four coils (standard way). Then go around the thumb. The orientation is correct each and every time. The first two coils are nicely puckered out and ready for "5" to thread through.

OK - let's see if I loaded the illustration correctly>>>>>

Well I'll embed it too....
