Does everyone carry some form of a knife or pocket knife when climbing? I do from old habit, but wasn't sure if it's a general rule out there, or if it's somewhat sporadic.

Six years ago I had to cut a climbing line on an industrial rescue climb...No saws or chainsaws there... So it saved a life. I've got a serrated spyderco with a blunt tip in a pocket on my harness, and carry it so it can't open unintentionally. I've got more knives then one could imagine. Been collecting them since I was 4. (yeah, 4). Three years back I sold the whole collection except for 30 or so....

JayD, if you could explain "?t is illegal". Is there a restriction on blade length or what? In Canada we have the infamous gun registry, which is supposed to prevent violent gun crimes, and now we don't shoot and kill people, we stab and maim them. It appears that the only gun slingers left are the Police and the hardened criminals. Shh! if the politicians get word that there are places that restrict or forbid pocket knives, I'll really be in trouble.

Hi Treemonkey. I would hazard a guess that 250 mill wouldn't cover the cost of the interest. What a blatant waste of tax dollars, the money would have been put to better use if they ran an electric fence around the large metropolitan cities, put metal detectors at the gates and hired some armed gaurds. Hey they might even curb the drug smugglers, if they wanted to. I have carried a knife since I was I was a little kid, on the farm with stock around, it was considered a mandatory tool. The one time I didn't have it was at a rural horse show, a horse, was tied to a trailer got spooked and ended up with the rope around his neck. The poor bugger almost choked to death, and all I felt was a feeling of uslessness. I used to carry a knife on my climbing saddle, and lost it. At a climbing workshop someone asked why I would carry it, after all I had a chainsaw, handsaw and secuteurs all within reach. Have you ever tried to cut climbing line with a handsaw? I did, and even when I wasn't in a panic situation, it was a chore. I now carry a super sharp folding lockblade in the thigh pocket of my chainsaw pants... |

bigshea13, don't laugh to hard, my brother-in-law (feedlot manager) asked if our 250 Bandit would grind up their Deads. I told him that it would probably require a bigger chipper. I might also be a GOOD idea to have ?m semi-frozen. ![]() The real issue was what to do with the end product, after all the BSE issues, we decide that we should send the mash up to Alaska. ![]() By the way, when are you movin'. |

Bigshea13, I must apologies, you never know who is watching. PITA, oh sorry, PETA might misunderstand, the cattle went down and are already dead. I don't kow if you were aware but Canada has just gone through one of the nations worst murder cases in it history. The guy from BC was found guilty of 6 counts of murder (appealed of course), he is suspected of numerous more counts. The bodies disappeared at his pig farm, forensics spent months trying to get a total number of victims. Truly a sick mother.... I am still a liitle baffled as to the reason for not allowing even a pocket knife in Oz, what is the weapon of choice now? Call me old school, I still believe that weapons don't kill people, people do! Treemonkey, that friend of yours must have a set of stones on him. It would be a situation that could have really gotten out of control IF he would of panicked. Glad to hear he got the chance to work another day. |

I am still a liitle baffled as to the reason for not allowing even a pocket knife in Oz, what is the weapon of choice now well....no knives on planes so they started using box cutters. hell, the net gives detailed instructions to the assembly of pen guns. seek and yee shall find.. when people are forced they think outside the box.....especially those with nothing, or should i say the ones that think they have nothing to lose. |

I carry an Emerson CQC-7. With the "wave" feature =) Has a little hook on the back side of the blade, it's liner-locking, but when you pull it out of your pocket, it catches on the hem and comes flipping out and locking. Opens faster than an auto and all you have to do is pull on it the right way. Half serrated, half straight, tanto tip. Total blade length 2 3/4" I carry it everywhere, especially while clmibing. We used to be required to carry one while I was an instructor, as several of our rescue methods included attatching the patient to our harness's TIP, then cutting their line. Haven't needed one yet while doing tree work, just don't feel quite right without it ![]() I was kinda needling you guys before about the guns... but what's this about no knives??? I wouldn't last long over there! Like I've stated before, if they're going to got that far, they should outlaw Bic pens as well!

I don't think it is illegal to carry a knife here as long as you have a "legitimate reason". I always carry a pocket knife, except on planes.

Pocketknives are a legal issue here to, can't have a lock on the blade, and must be under 4 inches long. Strongly depends on the situation too... If they see you in a forest no-one will say a word, not even police. When they catch you carrying it on the way to a disco, you are gonna fry big time... I've got a Spyderco Military for EDC, a spyderco Endura black on my climbing harness in a spare pocket of my back-up silky pouch... An spyderco Assist 2 in the car in the dashboard, a spyderco rescue in the emergency kit, A small delica to cut various things... If I go to a big city over here, and things could become frisky, I carry a Spyderco Civilian. It has a very high psychological effect on a BG, and therefore showing is most of the time enough, instead of using... | |

Here's some links to Australias prohibited weapons. Weapons https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/policies/.../weapons_a.pdf http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/sl...df/1997-12.pdf I got a good 10" blade on me when I'm fishing. There's allowances made in the act for carrying when req'd for work, recreation, ceremony etc.

Police make a lot of judgement calls, intent, attitude etc. For example, drinking in public places is prohibited however there's mum, dad and kids in a park having a nice BBQ. They have a beer or wine etc ... no biggie no-one gets booked. But in the carpark are some young hoons drinking, they get booked. The line I find is pretty clear for most part.
